Alfa Sud/Sprint
Alfa Romeo Alfasud and Sprint Spare Parts
With the Alfasud and the Alfasud Sprint coupé based on it, Alfa Romeo took a completely new direction in the early seventies. The first front wheel drive of the brand, a longitudinally mounted four cylinder boxer engine and a pioneering body design by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign turned both models into classics that remain highly regarded by enthusiasts to this day. Our range covers original spare parts and carefully selected reproductions for the Alfasud saloon and the Sprint coupé.
The History of the Alfa Romeo Alfasud
Development of the Alfasud began in 1967 under the leadership of the Austrian engineer Rudolf Hruska, who had previously worked at Porsche and Fiat. The model made its world debut at the 1971 Turin Motor Show and series production started in April 1972. The car was built at the new Pomigliano d'Arco plant near Naples, established specifically for this project. The name itself was derived from this geography, as Sud means South in Italian. Up to 1983, 893,719 Alfasud saloons and Giardinetta estates were produced, making the model one of the most successful Alfa Romeos in the entire brand history.
The Boxer Engine of the Alfasud
A central element of the concept was the completely newly developed four cylinder boxer engine. Water cooled and longitudinally mounted, with one overhead camshaft per cylinder bank driven by toothed belt, it offered a low centre of gravity and a particularly rev happy character. Displacement started at 1186 cc and grew over the production run through 1286, 1350 and 1490 cc up to the Sprint flagship variant with 1712 cc.
The Alfasud Model Variants
- Alfasud saloon (1972 to 1983), four and two door, with 1.2 and 1.3 litre boxer engines as base versions
- Alfasud ti (from 1973), two door sports version with uprated 1.2 litre engine
- Alfasud Giardinetta (from 1975), three door estate with large tailgate
- Alfasud Super and Super Diesel, comfort trim with higher standard
- Alfasud 1.5 ti Veloce (from 1978), 1490 cc boxer with 95 hp and twin carburettors
The Alfa Romeo Sprint
In September 1976 Alfa Romeo added the three door Alfasud Sprint coupé to the range. Also designed by Giugiaro, this model adopted the floorpan and drivetrain from the Alfasud. With the 1983 model year the Alfasud prefix was dropped and the coupé was marketed simply as Alfa Romeo Sprint. By the time production ended in 1989, 121,434 examples had been built. With the 1.7 litre boxer of the later years the Sprint reached up to 105 hp.
