The History of the Alfa Romeo GT Bertone

In September 1963 Alfa Romeo unveiled the Giulia Sprint GT at the IAA in Frankfurt. Its expressive bodywork was designed by the then 25 year old Giorgetto Giugiaro for Carrozzeria Bertone. Built on the floor pan of the Giulia saloon, the elegant coupé became famous for the distinctive step nose bonnet of the first series. Affordable, fast and uncompromisingly Italian, the GT became the dream car of an entire generation of Alfisti.

Model Variants Overview

Over its twelve year production run, the Bertone grew into a full model family with numerous engine variants:

• Giulia Sprint GT 1.6 (1963 to 1966), the original model with Twin Cam four cylinder engine and step nose
• Giulia GT 1300 Junior (1966 to 1975), affordable entry variant with 1290 cc
• Giulia Sprint GT Veloce 1600 (1966 to 1968), sport version with 109 hp
• 1750 GT Veloce (1967 to 1972), displacement increased to 1779 cc
• 2000 GTV (1971 to 1976), top model with 1962 cc and up to 131 hp
• GT 1600 Junior (1972 to 1975), last 1600 cc variant
• GTA and GTA 1300 Junior, racing versions with aluminium bodywork developed by Autodelta

The Rare GTC Cabriolet

The coupé range was complemented by the open GTC cabriolet, introduced in 1965 on the GT floor pan. With only around 1000 examples built, the GTC is today one of the rarest collector cars of the entire series. The role of the open top Alfa Romeo was taken over from 1966 by the Pininfarina designed Spider 105/115.
