164/Super

Alfa Romeo 164 and 164 Super Spare Parts (Type 164, 1987 to 1998)

With the Alfa Romeo 164 the brand entered the upper midsize class in 1987 to take on German premium competitors. The body design was created by Enrico Fumia at Pininfarina as early as 1981, shortly after the Ferrari Testarossa and with clearly recognisable affinities to that sports car. The result was a particularly aerodynamic saloon with a drag coefficient of just 0.30. Between 1987 and 1997 a total of 273,857 examples were built at the Arese plant before production ended in favour of the Alfa Romeo 166. Our range covers original spare parts and carefully selected reproductions for the early series, the Super version introduced in 1992 and all engine variants including the all wheel drive Q4.

The History of the Alfa Romeo 164

The 164 was developed under the Tipo 4 joint project initiated by Fiat, Lancia and Saab in the early 1980s. The platform also produced the Fiat Croma, Lancia Thema and Saab 9000. Alfa Romeo adopted the floorpan but designed the body entirely independently through Pininfarina. The model made its debut at the IAA Frankfurt in September 1987. For the first time at Alfa Romeo, computer aided design and fully galvanised body panels were used. In summer 1992 the first facelift brought the Super version with extended body, new bumpers and revised interior. From early 1993 the Q4 with permanent all wheel drive and a Getrag six speed gearbox joined the range. Production ended on 27 June 1997, with the successor 166 reaching the market in 1998.

The Engine Variants Overview

  • 164 2.0 Turbo (from 1991), 175 hp four cylinder turbo petrol
  • 164 2.0 V6 Turbo (from 1991), Busso V6 with reduced displacement and turbocharger, 201 to 210 hp, mainly for markets with displacement based taxation
  • 164 3.0 V6 12V (1987 to 1992), Busso V6 with 180 to 200 hp
  • 164 3.0 V6 24V (from 1992), four valve Busso V6 with 211, later 232 hp
  • 164 QV 24V (1992 to 1994), Quadrifoglio Verde flagship with 232 hp, dynamically tuned chassis and sports trim
  • 164 Q4 (1993 to 1997), permanent all wheel drive with Getrag six speed manual, 24V Busso V6 with 232 hp
  • 164 2.5 TD (1987 to 1995), 125 hp VM Motori four cylinder turbo diesel, the fastest diesel saloon of its time with a top speed over 200 km/h

Body, Platform and Technology

The body of the 164 is defined by its wedge shaped line, the Scudetto extending into the bonnet, the longitudinal design grooves along the flanks and the full width rear light unit. Despite sharing the platform the 164 has no visible common parts with Croma, Thema and 9000. The chassis is fully independently sprung, the brake system features ABS as standard and on later versions electronically controlled dampers. The galvanised body effectively addressed the rust problems of earlier Alfa models.

164 Super as Comprehensive Facelift

In summer 1992 the Super version arrived as a thorough model update. Visible changes were a notably enlarged Scudetto, redrawn bumpers, new sills and body coloured exterior mirrors and door handles. The interior received a new dashboard, new seats and higher quality materials. From spring 1994 all 164 models adopted the Super styling, the variant without suffix was dropped. The sports versions QV and Q4 partly retained the bumpers of the original series.
