Spider (105/115)
Alfa Romeo Spider 105/115 Spare Parts
The Alfa Romeo Spider counts among the longest lived and most beloved cabriolets of Italian automotive history. For almost three decades, from 1966 to 1993, the two seater roadster of the 105 and 115 series rolled off the production line largely unchanged. Designed by Aldo Brovarone and Battista Pininfarina, built at the Pininfarina plant in Grugliasco near Turin and powered by the legendary Twin Cam four cylinder engine, the Spider is regarded as one of the most defining open top Alfa Romeo models ever. Our range covers original spare parts and carefully selected reproductions for all four series.
The History of the Alfa Romeo Spider
In spring 1966 Alfa Romeo presented the successor to the rather baroque Giulia Spider in Geneva. Reactions were mixed at first, as the unusually rounded rear end divided opinion among enthusiasts. Inside the factory the car was ironically nicknamed Osso di Seppia, the cuttlefish bone. Its lasting nickname Duetto came from a competition among European readers, with a new Spider as the main prize. Worldwide fame followed in 1967 thanks to its iconic appearance alongside Dustin Hoffman in the film The Graduate. Even Steve McQueen praised the car at the time in a comparison test for Sports Illustrated magazine.
The Four Series Overview
Over nearly thirty years of production the Spider went through four clearly distinguishable generations, each with its own character and engine line up.
Series 1, Round Tail and Duetto (1966 to 1969)
The first series with its characteristically curved rear was built around 13,600 times. Initially the car was only offered with a 1570 cc four cylinder, later joined by versions with 1290 and 1779 cc. In Germany the model was always officially marketed as Alfa Romeo 1600 Spider, never as Duetto.
Series 2, coda tronca or Fastback (1969 to 1982)
At the end of 1969 the Spider received its first thorough revision. The rear was shortened by around ten centimetres and given a clean cut, leading to the Italian nickname coda tronca and the familiar name Fastback. The bumpers became sturdier, the windscreen was set at a flatter angle and a modern dual circuit brake system replaced the single circuit setup of the first series. Brake and clutch pedals were no longer standing but hanging. The engine range grew to 1300, 1600, 1750 and 2000 cc.
Series 3, Aerodinamica and Rubber Lip (1983 to 1989)
With the 1983 model year the Spider received an extensive visual update. The pronounced rubber rear spoiler and revised bumpers earned the car the nicknames Rubber Lip or Aerodinamica. The third series was available with 1600 and 2000 cc engines.
Series 4, the Final Generation (1990 to 1993)
The fourth and last series of the classic line dropped the rubber spoiler and appeared smoother and more comfort oriented. For the first time the Spider received power steering as standard, alongside other refinements. Engines were available in 1600 and 2000 cc.
