Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT and GTV Spare Parts (116 Series)

The two door sports coupé of the 116 series, first marketed as Alfetta GT and renamed simply GTV after the 1980 facelift, is one of the most defining Alfa Romeo coupés of the late seventies and early eighties. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign, built on the platform of the Alfetta saloon shortened by eleven centimetres at the wheelbase and equipped with sophisticated transaxle layout, the model rolled off the production line between 1974 and 1986 with a total of 134,643 examples. The History of the Alfetta GT and GTV

In early 1974 Alfa Romeo introduced the Alfetta GT sports coupé. Instead of the previously favoured Carrozzeria Bertone, the design task was entrusted to the rising Giorgetto Giugiaro. His proposal with an extremely flat bonnet and generous rear was revolutionary for the time and offered room for four passengers and a spacious boot despite the sporting line. In autumn 1980 the car received a fundamental facelift with new bumpers, spoilers and side trim panels in plastic, along with a revised interior. From then on it was marketed solely as GTV.

Transaxle Layout and Suspension

Like the Alfetta saloon, the coupé used the classic transaxle drivetrain. The engine sat in front, the five speed gearbox together with the differential at the rear axle. The result was a nearly balanced weight distribution of around 50 to 50. The rear De Dion axle with Watt linkage provided outstanding handling and was considered technically pioneering.

• Alfetta GT 1.6 (1976 to 1980), 1570 cc and 109 hp as the entry version
• Alfetta GTV 2000 (1976 to 1980), 1962 cc and 122 hp, from 1979 as GTV 2000 L with 130 hp thanks to new camshafts
• GTV 2.0 (1980 to 1985), facelift version with plastic bumpers and new dashboard
• GTV 6 2.5 (1980 to 1986), flagship with the V6 designed by Giuseppe Busso, 2492 cc and 158 hp

GTV 6 in Motorsport

The GTV 6 was not only the road going flagship but also extremely successful in motorsport. Between 1982 and 1985 the car won the European Touring Car Championship four times in a row. With the characteristic sound of the Busso V6 it continues to delight collectors and brand enthusiasts to this day.
